Company officials would not confirm XQ as the name for the upcoming crossover, but executives at Jaguar have been hinting recently that the company is seeking to enter higher-volume segments to help boost its overall sales numbers.
The luxury crossover segment is just such a segment and would fit well with Jaguar's luxury brand image. Jaguar has plenty of room to introduce a midsize, two- or three-row crossover with distinctive Jaguar styling.
There are two possibilities for the architecture of the Jaguar XQ. One route would see the XQ built on an enlarged version of a new platform being developed for the 2015 Jaguar XS, a small sport sedan. The rear-wheel-drive platform will also accommodate all-wheel drive, not to mention various vehicle sizes as it aims to form the basis for the Jaguar car lineup going forward.
A more likely scenario is the use of the new, all-aluminum D7u platform introduced underneath the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The extremely light architecture would easily accommodate the dimensions of a midsize crossover, not to mention help Jaguar spread its development cost over a wider range of vehicles.
Look for the Jaguar XS
sedan to arrive first as a 2015 model, while the crossover should follow
as a 2016 model. Stay connected to Tom Wood Jaguar
